  • Concept: 3.5

The location and cast of characters are unchanged from the original game, but the ever increasing difficulty and randomly generated living valley should give players hours of gameplay.

  • Gameplay: 4

The rich character customization makes every character feel unique as they tackle the zombie hordes. It elevates the game from simple button mashing and allows for some strategy as you decide between a stealthy in and out approach, or a weapons free shotgun spree.

  • Graphics: 2

The graphics have the same frame rate hitches, poor draw distances, and clipping issues as the original game. This is not the game that is going to make you feel good about that new video card you just bought. Thankfully, the graphics never negatively impact the gameplay.

  • Plot: 2

The goal of Breakdown was to remove any semblance of a plot and simply throw an endless supply of zombies at the player, and challenge them to simply survive for as long as possible. It is an addition of a new game mode, not a continuation of the story of State of Decay.

  • Sound: 3.5

Combat sound effects are visceral and satisfying, but engine notes become droning on long trips around the map. The voice acting is descent, but extremely repetitive.

Overall: 3
