The Eve Valkyrie Project Morpheus Demo Isn’t Running On A PS4
Early yesterday morning, before my own Project Morpheus demo, I’d heard some folks on the GDC expo floor saying they thought they saw a keyboard underneath the Project Morpheus demo of Eve Valkyrie. Right around that time I strapped in for Valkyrie running on the Oculus Rift DK2, which was outright running on PC. Later on I had the chance to try out Morpheus, and when my time with the Valkyrie demo ended, I asked the PlayStation rep if the demo was running on a PS4; she said no.
The reason this is even worrying me at this point is due to the graphical jump between the Valkyrie demo (running on PC) and “The Deep”, running on PS4. Sony had never stated their Morpheus GDC demos were running on PS4 hardware exclusively, but it does raise some serious questions.
The acceptable frame rate for VR is considered 90FPS with a more ideal rate being 120. It’s going to be a real challenge for developers to get their games running dual 1080p at a frame rate of 90-120 on PS4, and I think the fact that Valkyrie wasn’t running on the hardware is an indication of that.
There’s still plenty of time for devs to work with the newly announced Morpheus HMD before it ever hits the market. Sony is all-in on VR, that much was clear when the announcement ended, and people began trying it out on the show floor. Hopefully we’ll look back on this 20 years from now as the genesis of VR on console, and the beginning of a new type of experience for gamers.
