SOE Promises To Put The Sandbox “At The Core Of Everything”
SOE has recently made the landmark decision to unify all of their titles under one subscription. President of SOE, John Smedley has stated,
We want to innovate and let players be a part of everything we do including make the game in the first place. We’re going to take the idea of sandbox gaming and we’re putting it at the core of everything we’re doing.
He contemplates the arms race that developers are constantly losing to their users, musing that gamers chew through years worth of development content in no time. Some of SOE’s current MMO offerings include DC Universe Online and Planetside 2. Both of which will eventually find their way to PS4 (DCUO is already available).
But Smedley isn’t referring to what’s currently available, he’s talking about the future. Many, if not all MMO’s offer mountains of content and player interaction, and most fail to sustain it. SOE has also teased a new IP that will appeal heavily to SWG fans. It’s also been announced that EverQuest Next is coming to PS4 in the future.
An aspect that needs to be considered moving forward lies in the hyper approachable architecture of the PS4. Hopefully that will lead to more of SOE’s future titles being released in parity across the PC and PS4. Smedley has made a bold claim to make user engagement at the core of SOE games moving forward. Only time will tell if he and his studio can deliver on that promise.
