Microsoft And Machinima Have Officially Commented On XB1M13 (UPDATED)

UPDATE: Microsoft has further amended their reply to our inquiry. You can find the updated statement below,

“Microsoft was not aware of individual contracts Machinima had with their content providers as part of this promotion and we didn’t provide feedback on any of the videos. We have asked Machinima to not post any additional Xbox One content as part of this media buy and we have asked them to add disclaimers to the videos that were part of this program indicating they were part of paid advertising.” – Microsoft spokesperson

It seems that this statement further distances Microsoft from what they describe as “individual contracts” that Machinima had with their content partners. Furthermore, Microsoft has ended the promo and asked Machinima to post disclaimers on any videos tagged with XB1M13.

ORIGINAL STORY: As of now, you’re likely aware that we broke news over the weekend of a new campaign to promote Xbox One on Youtube‘s Machinima channel. At first, we thought it was business as usual, but later details proved that the dealings were somewhat covert in nature.

When we reached out to Microsoft for further clarification on the matter, we were given a joint statement from Microsoft and Machinima,

Joint statement from Machinima and Microsoft:

“This partnership between Machinima and Microsoft was a typical marketing partnership to promote Xbox One in December. The Xbox team does not review any specific content or provide feedback on content. Any confidentiality provisions, terms or other guidelines are standard documents provided by Machinima. For clarity, confidentiality relates to the agreements themselves, not the existence of the promotion.”

This statement seems to implicate Machinima added the clause forcing YouTuber’s to speak only positive comments about themselves, Microsoft, and Xbox One after the deal had been struck. As for the confidentiality verbiage, Microsoft and Machinima state that it wasn’t created to disavow the existence of the promotion, only the guidelines for eligibility.

Our exclusive statement from Microsoft (above) has now been featured in Forbes online.

This is not “normal” or “others do this too” situation….. Micro$oft and Machinima tried to hide that they was paying youtubers to promote their product. Its against Federal laws that you cannot receive compensation and not disclose that said party did if you review a product of theirs. The last part is the most important. Micro did not want anybody knowing they was trying to promote their product like this. You cannot receive money or some other type of payment, then review a product form that company that you recieved compensation from, and not disclose it. ITS AGAINST THE LAW… no matter what company you are……

  • Nintendont

Who really cares? Sony and Nintendo do this as well, it’s marketing plain and simple. Stupid gaming drama blown out of proportion as always, for attention and web hits, lol

  • Saul Martinez

People do realize that Machinima and rooster teeth are what they are because of Microsoft. Its only natural they would continue to promote their products.

Again, the issue is with non-disclosure. No one looks at Michael Jordan and goes “Hmmm I wonder if he knows about those shoes they are always talking about with his silhouette on them?” It’s OBVIOUS that he has a deal with Nike. If Michael Jordan says, hey this shoe is awesome, you probably won’t even stop for 2 seconds before saying, yeah next opinion please…

If a guy who lives two houses away from you talks about how awesome these shoes are, you’ll be more likely to buy them, because you can more readily trust the opinion of someone who hasn’t been “influenced” (to an extent anyway).

Its the reviewers integrity that’s now being called into question. How many reviews can you trust now? It’s going to be hard to hear ANY positives about XB1 now without thinking “they have been paid to say it”. And THAT is the very problem with this whole scenario. Microsoft is hurting it’s own brand name in the end more than anyone else could possibly have done.

Basically we have known for a long time already that ms pays people to troll the internet in favor of their products including but not limited to xbox, windows and windows phone.
We got a big NDA breach back after the xb1 reveal that stated this.
