PlayStation UK Boss Hints At What SCE Worldwide Studios Are Up To

PlayStation UK Managing Director, Fergal Gara has stated that a number of “gems” will be released on PS4 in 2014 that  will “push boundaries”. When speaking of Sony‘s network of first party studios known as SCE Worldwide Studios, the exec offered,

“All of our major studios are working on PS4 content. These guys are experimenting with and working on the new platform.”

We already know what Sucker Punch and Naughty Dog are up to. Uncharted PS4 was announced on the eve of the PS4 launch and inFamous: Second Son is due March 21st, 2014. SCEJ and Guerrilla Games released Knack and Killzone: Shadow Fall during the PS4 launch. And Evolution Studios’ Driveclub is supposedly due early 2014 after a delay took it out of the launch lineup. But that’s only a sampling of the stable that SCE has developing only for PlayStation.

Also during PS4 All Access, Shu Yoshida expressed his excitement as to what Santa Monica Studio was working on. Besides Santa Monica that means we’re still waiting on announcements as to what notable studios like Sony Bend, Foster City, and San Diego are working on. A PS4 debut for Polyphony Digital’s Gran Turismo series is rumored to be in the pipeline for 2014 as well. Will Team ICO bring The Last Guardian to the forefront in 2014? If Gara’s claim is serious, then whatever they’re working on is for PS4.

Not to mention the fact that Media Molecule has recently shipped Tearaway and are likely working on PS4 content along with Guerrilla Cambridge, whom just recently released Killzone: Mercenary for Vita. External Development Studio has been lending their hand on development across the board as of late. Although not formally a first party studio, rumors suggest Housemarque (Resogun) may be working on Dead Nation 2 for PS4. Another studio developing exclusively for PS4, Ready at Dawn, continues work on The Order: 1886, but they aren’t an official first party either.

We’re not sure as to what we’ll see as of yet, but taking stock of SCE Worldwide Studios gives us a better idea as to which studio is currently available for proper production on a PS4 title. No doubt we’ll see an announcement from Santa Monica Studio in 2014 and it sounds like Polyphony may be readying a new racer for PS4 as well. Hopefully Team ICO’s The Last Guardian will re-emerge and we can’t wait to see what the rest of the strong network of first party studios are working on. Here’s to 2014, a new year, and a new opportunity to showcase PS4.

What do you think Sony Bed, Foster City, San Diego, Media Molecule, and Team ICO are up to? How about Guerrilla Cambridge? Let us know in the comments below.

The Last Guardian MUST be shown in 2014, or it’s all over.

    • Hugh G. Rection

People are still holding onto the Last Guardian. That game is dead, died long ago.

      • Nintendo Fan 4 Lif3

Don’t you talk to me like that. If it’s dead, why don’t Sony deny that it’s still alive?

      • Axe99

Sony have been on record recently saying development on it is still underway. The creative director on the game has said the same thing. I’d still argue caution, as any game with troubled development can have its issues, but it is most definitely alive.

TLG is a mythical beast. If it doesn’t appear until later in the PS4’s release schedule, I wouldn’t be surprised. If we never see the game in the form we know it, I also wouldn’t be surprised. Probably a huge undertaking to port the PS3 assets over to the PS4 and still live up to expectations. Here’s hoping….

      • Something about that TLG griffin reminds me of The Neverending Story. Hopefully we see it soon.

        • jb223

I grew up on that flick…sad that the game’s production has as much in common w/ the title of the movie as the game proper could possibly have w/ the movie itself

      • Nintendo Fan 4 Lif3

If it’s a huge undertaking it will be worth the wait, as a delayed game is eventually good, while an early game is forever bad. Guess who said that quote?

        • Sorahearts

Shigeru Miyamoto. Everyone knows he said that quote

          • Nintendo Fan 4 Lif3

They better know or they will be sorry they ever met me.

          • Sorahearts

I already knew. But I’ll probably know what’ll happen

          • Nintendo Fan 4 Lif3

Yeah I know. U don’t wanna know what happens.

          • Sorahearts

Maybe I do and maybe I don’t know what’ll happen

          • Nintendo Fan 4 Lif3

We’ll have to wait and see when it does happen then. Another thing, I am on the Hades Cup in KH and Hades is difficult as he keeps killing me very easily. Will equipping Firaga rings be enough to sustain the damage and last it out to beat him , as I noticed he has lotta HP, or am I gonna real have to grind just to endure that battle, as it’s like my fifth time I am gonna go fight him and it’s getting frustrating? I have spent time boosting my stats for HP to 90 and other stuff and also for Donald and Goofy and hope there is no special trick to beating him that I am wasting time upgrading in the first place?

          • Sorahearts

I have not done Hades Cup on KH1, so I probably don’t know. Wanna talk about that on NintenScience?

          • Nintendo Fan 4 Lif3

            Yeah sure.

          • Sorahearts

Just click on my profile, and it should say “Troll-Free-Disqus”

          • Nintendo Fan 4 Lif3

            Got it.

    • ObsessedGeorge

      Please I hope you’re right!

      I’m dying to see it!!

      • Nintendo Fan 4 Lif3

        I am. You’ll see 😉

  • Solid Snake

my hype for The Last Guardian is dying regretfully.
and whatever happen to rockstars agent?

    • Nintendo Fan 4 Lif3

They will both happen. Don’t worry.

  • Axe99

You don’t have “official” and “unofficial” first parties – you’re either first-party (wholly owned by the platform holder), second-party (independent dev with the platform holders IP – eg; Insomniac and the Ratchet and Clank series) or third-party (independent with your own IP). All three can be exclusives (or, indeed, multiplatform, although first and second-party multiplats are rare, but not unheard of).

    • extermin8or2

Incorrect second party is independent developer who has their game publisjed by the platform holder they can still own their ip. 3rd larty is when another publisher publishes the game.

      • Axe99

Sorry, good call. My main point was that you don’t have ‘official’ and ‘unofficial’ first party though, as referred to in the article.

  • JonathanisPrimus

Team Ico is a team within SCE Japan Studio. They already shipped a PS4 game, and presumably are involved with more. So TLG could stay a PS3 game and what he said would still be correct. That said, TLG is most definitely a PS4 game now.

I’ve played most of Sony’s franchises, but can’t say many of them have been great games. Like Nintendo, Sony’s games are the same old, same old. I’ve played way too many Sony games which have fallen way short, more so on the PS3. Sony’s games are more about the graphics than the game play. If you’re wondering what’s coming to the PS4, I can’t see many new franchises. As for the Vita, Sony have virtually ditched new games. Buy a Vita for remote play, as Sony have become obsessed with that function. If the Vita is selling decent in the state it’s in, that’s easy work for Sony.
