Signs Point To Bethesda Game Studios Working On Fallout 4

Fallout 4 Bethesda Game Studios

Following the recent speculation regarding Fallout 4; we decided to do some digging. We know that thesurvivor2299 (Fallout 3 took place in 2277) is registered by ZeniMax Media, so it’s Fallout related (not yet confirmed). There was also some recent chatter when a supposed Bethesda insider posted “internal” project details about Fallout 4’s development.

So there we sat, with our thumbs twiddling, and legs twitching. We had to at least try to find more information. A while back it was rumored that Arkane would be taking over development on the flaccid Prey 2 project, but this was outright silenced by Pete Hines.

Now let’s take a look at what some of Zenimax’s other studios are up to. Machine Games are currently working on the recently delayed Wolfenstein: The New Order, Tango Gameworks on The Evil Within, Battlecry Studios on an unannounced free-to-play project, and Zenimax Online Studios is busy with The Elder Scrolls Online. That leaves just a few studios left in the Fallout 4 pool, one of which is hiring strictly for PC and next-gen game development; Bethesda Game Studios (creators of Fallout 3 and The Elder Scrolls IV & 5).

When you start trolling the various job postings at Bethesda game Studios you’ll see a selection of open positions like concept artist, quest designer, level designer, and senior world artist. There’s a couple very specific requirements included in all the aforementioned job listings; Experience playing previous Bethesda Games Studios games and Experience with The Elder Scrolls Construction Set or GECK (Garden of Eden Creation Kit). Which is both a part of the Fallout mythos and the actual proprietary toolset that was used to create Fallout 3 and New Vegas.

Additionally the level designer position mentions, Experience scripting or programming complex interactivity. More than likely referring to dynamic, branching storylines. Lastly, the concept artist must, Create the look of the game by working with the Art Director to establish a consistent visual direction for mood, environments, characters, weapons, etc. by creating inspiring concept art that focuses on dynamic visual elements that maintain accurate scale, established architectural standards and character/creature anatomy that will be used to create in game content. This phrase mentions several cues to the Fallout universe, namely the parts that mention dynamic visual environments and established architectural standards. The vault is not only a pillar of the Fallout series, it typically follows a very established architectural design. There’s also a plethora of irradiated creatures throughout the Fallout series.

Considering the fact that Zenimax Online Studios will be shipping The Elder Scrolls Online in the Spring of 2014, it’s unlikely there’s a next-gen Elder Scrolls game in production at Bethesda Game Studios at this time. All signs are pointing to a next-gen exclusive Fallout in the works at Bethesda Game Studios.

Now let’s talk about what’s going on over at thesurvivor2299.com at the moment. The countdown is set to end at roughly 2:35pm CST this Sunday. The constant stream of Morse code has been put through a Ceasar cipher and translated to,

“MY DEAR SISTER. I’M HEADING TO THE INSTITUTE. GOD KNOWS WHAT HAPPENED TO THIS PLACE NOW. THIS OLD BASTARD WILL HELP US. HE MUST HELP US. —0321—”

The Institute is well-known in the Fallout universe and is located in what’s generally referred to as The Commonwealth. If you’re familiar with Massachusetts, you’ll know that it’s officially referred to as the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The location is mentioned in both Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas. In the former it’s the driving force behind the side quest “The Replicated Man” and in New Vegas it’s revealed that Robert House (Mr. House) had attended the “Massachusetts Institute of Technology”. The Institute is a scientific utopia of sorts sealed off from the,  “war-ravaged quagmire of violence and despair…” that surrounds it.

The Institute would serve as a fantastic backdrop for an unannounced Fallout project. So far our information requests at Bethesda have been met with “We don’t comment on rumor or speculation.” Hopefully we’ll get proper confirmation of Bethesda Game Studios working on a new installment in the Fallout series this Sunday.
