Bedlam Returns In The New Thief Gameplay Trailer

It’s hard to believe it’s been almost ten years since we’ve had a release in the Thief franchise, but that hiatus is almost over. Long time fans of the series may have a hard time identifying with the new direction of Thief, but it’s a formula that will likely appeal to a mainstream audience.

There were a few things I was very happy to see throughout the trailer. The first person perspective seems to have character rather than being stoic with a pair of floating hands. I’m also a fan of the way Garrett interacts with his environment. A subtle brush against a wall, or the measured way he opens a door is yet another aspect that helps add immersion to a first person experience.

Within the trailer we get a brief glimpse of a non-lethal takedown as well as some stealth gameplay. It’s hard to gauge the level of freedom the player will have to execute heists, but what we did see was environments built with a healthy amount of verticality.

What long running series fans may not be happy about are the scripted sequences and explosions that have been added to the foray. After all,  the moniker of a master Thief is to infiltrate, pilfer and escape without anyone being the wiser.

Thief will sneak onto the PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One February 25th, 2014 in North America.
