Microsoft’s Phil Spencer Says The Xbone Name Is “Going To Stick”
In an interview with Gamespot, Microsoft Studios head Phil Spencer offered his personal opinion on the Xbox One nickname, Xbone. The executive went on to say,
“At first, I guess the thing that bugged me the most is I didn’t see it,”said Spencer in an interview with GameSpot.“I’d been looking at the name for Xbox One for months, and I wasn’t clever enough to merge them and come up with Xbone.”
In the past, Major Nelson has gone on record expressing his dislike for the name saying that the moniker was disrespectful to the Xbox One and the teams working on it. At this point, Spencer thinks Microsoft is going to have to just #dealwithit,
“But, you know, I think it’s going to stick,” he said. “I think we can say we don’t like it as much as we want, but it’s a clever use of the name. Probably not the most flattering name, but I think it’s going to be there.”
From here on out it will be interesting to see how Microsoft handles the situation. The company has already gone as far as to purchase the domain. At some point it may be worth it for the company to embrace the nickname and make light of it, rather than trying to spoil the gaming communities fun.
