Michael Pachter – The Xbox One And PS4 Will Have An Install Base Of 110M
We had a moment to catch up with Michael Pachter after his state of the industry panel at DMW 2013. When asked if the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One will have a higher install base than current gen, Pachter stated,
“It’ll be bigger than current gen. They each did about 75M (PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360), the next ones (Xbox One and PS4) will do 100-110M. Mostly because they’re going to take shares from the Wii and they’re also launching in new territories like Brazil.”
That’s a huge increase (25%) in install base. Meaning there could be up to 35M more consumers with home consoles in the next ten years in contrast to the last eight.
Pachter and the rest of the panel also spoke about the change from physical to digital media moving forward. With gaming holding the highest number of digital sales across all media, along with Sony and Microsoft‘s new stance on self-publishing, there’s a real opportunity for smaller developers to cash in.
