Major League Gaming – “We Want To Be The ESPN Of eSports”
Major League Gaming has just announced the teams that will be competing in the Dota 2 championship later this year. The event will take place in Columbus, Ohio from November 22nd-24th. The teams will be competing for the grand prize of $50,000.
Top North American teams Evil Geniuses and Team Liquid will be competing, along with The Alliance, Na’Vi, and Fnatic from Europe. The latter two teams took first and second place at the recent Valve sponsored Dota 2 competition, The International.
With the emergence of the eSport, MLG EVP Don Reilley stated, “We want to be the ESPN of eSports” at today’s Digital Media Wire NYC Games conference. A lofty goal, but in the long run you have to look at recent events like eSports athletes being granted pro-athlete Visa’s to compete. If MLG can foster the growth of the eSport effectively, the ambitious objective may be in sight.
