Sony’s PlayStation 4 Gamescom 2013 Highlights
Sony‘s conference started off with a demo of the PlayStation 4 dashboard and OS, the session was meant to show the seamless transition between activities on Sony’s new console. Popping in and out of music, friends lists, the PlayStation Store, and even multiple games like Killzone Shadow Fall was all handled rather smoothly by the updated PS4 architecture. We even saw a clip of gameplay quickly shared via Twitter.
SCEE CEO, Jim Ryan, started the oration off with a small PlayStation 3 segment. Gran Turismo 6 was on display early with a new video. The video confirmed a release date of December 6th. It was also announced that several car manufacturers would be unveiling concept cars in the upcoming racing sim.
The PlayStation Vita will receive a $50 price cut in both North America and Europe, making it’s new price point $199. It was also announced that Borderlands 2, Fez, and other high profile titles will be heading to the Vita in the coming months. The Vita indie channel was also heavily focused upon. Indie developers touted the ability to create unique, innovative games on the platform. Curve Studios expressed how impressed they were with the real time processing of the Vita with their game Stealth Bastard Inc. A Clone in the Dark.
Mark Cerny then took the stage to talk about the PlayStation 4 and it’s many updates, again talking about the super-charged PC architecture. He’s a positive PR magnet that Sony uses to strengthen it’s mission statements again and again. Cerny also touches upon the importance of indies, and reiterates the fact that Unity is supported on PS4.
Shahid Ahmad also announced Rogue Legacy and Guns of Icarus Online will make their console exclusive debuts on Sony’s PS4 platform. The biggest indie announcement came via Dennaton Games and Hotline Miami: Wrong Number, which will also debut exclusively on PlayStation 4 and PS Vita next year. Mojang‘s Minecraft will also launch along with the platform.
Sony Worldwide Studios continued the indie showcase teasing the post apocalyptic Everybody’s Gone To The Rapture with a bite size promo video. Tequila Works has taken a break from it’s brain eating ways to produce a new action platformer called Rime, also teased during the segment. Arrowhead Studios‘ Helldivers was announced as a cross-buy on the PlayStation 4, PS3, and PS Vita. It’s described a squad based, tactical shooter with an emphasis on teamwork. A Shadow of the Beast re-imagining on the PlayStation 4 was also given a brief moment.
PS4 Developer Updates
Sucker Punch offered an Infamous Second Son update with an all new video featuring a showdown between Delsin and another conduit, in the end he effectively absorbs their powers (most likely treading the evil path rather than the good). The smooth gameplay and impressive graphics make it a launch window title to look forward to.
Killzone Shadow Fall‘s multiplayer was revealed with a brand new video from Guerrilla Cambridge. Several character classes will be available that will tailor to your personal play style. The competitive multiplayer looks chaotic and visceral, and should help make Shadow Fall a huge launch title.
A detailed demo of Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag‘s remote-play capabilities were also shown. A full naval battle was demo’d on the PlayStation 4, and the Vita took things over when the action hit landfall. The graphical difference seemed negligible and performance didn’t take a dip as far as we could tell. Platforming remained seamless, combat was intuitive, and cinematics appeared crisp. Remote-play on top level titles will likely save your game time from extinction, and a good amount of relationships to boot. It was also reiterated that the Vita will allow remote-play on almost all of the titles releasing on PlayStation 4. The PlayStation 3 and PS Vita will receive additional Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag content featuring Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation protagonist, Aveline de Grandpre.
Yves Guillemot stepped on stage to announce that Sony and Ubisoft are collaborating on a Watch_Dogs feature film, and a new video was shown presenting Aiden Pierce’s ability to hack into the system and manipulate it to his own end. It was also confirmed that Watch_Dogs players will receive 4 additional missions, a character skin, and a hack boost on PlayStation.
Sony is also looking to make sure that European PlayStation 4 owners won’t be bogged down by slow broadband speeds. On average, European users have a broadband speed of 5 mbps, making them head and shoulders behind their North American competition. Sony is partnering with Ono, Virgin Media, Orange to offer PS4 owners broadband speeds of up to 200 mbps.
Andrew House closed out the press conference with a new PlayStation 3 price point. The 12GB PS3 will have a new MSRP of $199 in North America and the same amount in Euros in European markets. He also commented that gamers who purchase current gen PlayStation 3 games that want to upgrade to PlayStation 4 versions of Ubisoft, Warner Bros., and other publishers’ titles will see deep discounts on digital versions of said games. House poked fun at their competitor for backtracking on earlier non-friendly policies, while reinforcing Sony’s stance. He closed with the announcement of PlayStation 4’s launch date. Sony’s next gen will begin November 15th in North America and November 29th in Europe.
