John Carmack Is Now The Oculus Rift CTO

In huge industry news, legendary programmer and co-founder of id Software, John Carmack, has signed on as CTO with Oculus Rift. It’s unclear as to what Carmack’s continuing role at id will be, but it’s been confirmed he’ll remain there in some capacity. Earlier reports from Eurogamer contested that Carmack has, in fact, left id.

He expressed his beliefs that VR – as embodied by the Rift represents the same kind of groundbreaking work he’s been involved with in the past. Carmack prepared this statement for the Oculus community:

“I have fond memories of the development work that led to a lot of great things in modern gaming—the intensity of the first-person experience, LAN and internet play, game mods, and so on,”

“Duct taping a strap and hot gluing sensors onto Palmer’s early prototype Rift and writing the code to drive it ranks right up there. Now is a special time. I believe that VR will have a huge impact in the coming years, but everyone working today is a pioneer. The paradigms that everyone will take for granted in the future are being figured out today; probably by people reading this message. It’s certainly not there yet. There is a lot more work to do, and there are problems we don’t even know about that will need to be solved, but I am eager to work on them. It’s going to be awesome!”

Carmack was one of more high profile early promoters of the Oculus Rift technology, so it makes perfect sense that he’d end up being a huge part of the organization. Carmack has reportedly begun his tenure at Oculus Rift as of today. Congratulations innovative organization for attracting such an industry legend to it’s staff.
