Our First Film Kickstarter: The Night Guardian
We here at iGR have covered a variety of different Kickstarter campaigns, most of which have been about gaming. Which is fine, we’re a gaming site first and foremost so it would make sense that our coverage would focus on gaming projects. However, as you may well know, gaming isn’t the only focus that we have here. So, it was only a matter of time until our Kickstarter coverage started to reflect that. Well, that matter of time is today because we bring to you our coverage of The Night Guardian.
The Night Guardian is a campaign launched by producer Kyle Dare and writer/director Brian Ott. It centers on a dying grandfather connecting with his estranged grandson through a story about a superhero, called The Night Guardian, in 1970s New York. What’s interesting about the premise of the film is that the nature of the relationships within the Simmons family mirrors the lives of a lot of the superheroes that we know and love. The film will explore ideas such as redemption, re-connection, separation, abandonment and of course, family, but all under the guise of a superhero story. The best films and TV shows have layers of different themes throughout and it sounds like The Night Guardian is no exception and is one of the reasons why we’re covering it.
What’s different about this Kickstarter is that it won’t be a full-length feature like some of the more high profile Kickstarter campaigns you may have come across that have been started by celebrities, but a short film that’s being used as the group’s thesis project at the USC School of Cinematic Arts. So, not only would you be helping to fund an interesting project, it’s also going to a pretty good cause. It may not be going to a charity but I don’t think you’ll find anybody that would disagree that investing in the future of some bright college students would be a bad thing.
So, I’d like to think that maybe I have some clout in covering my first Kickstarter campaign but I’m probably just a delusional egomaniac. Still, you should listen to me when I say that The Night Guardian deserves your support. Don’t believe me? Check out their Kickstarter or Facebook pages and decide for yourself. But hurry! There’s only a week left in the campaign and they’re still about $7,000 shy of reaching their goal.
