2013-14 Upfront Presentations: ABC

Next up at the 2013-14 Upfront Presentations is ABC, the network that order what seems like a million pilots. That’s obviously hyperbole but they did order a total of 12 new scripted series; that’s a lot. And honestly, I’m not really sure I remember what shows all of them are replacing other than Happy Endings (may it rest in peace, that is unless USA picks it up). I don’t know what that means but it seems like a good thing for ABC since obviously the previous shows were pretty forgettable.

The most buzzed about pilot is clearly Marvel‘s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. which, as I mentioned in the Upfronts Preview is Disney‘s first attempt at bringing the wildly popular Marvel Cinematic Universe to TV. I mentioned in the preview that it would be interesting to see where ABC placed it and as you can see below, we learned that it will kick-off a block of all-new programming on Tuesdays. This is a bold move but as I mentioned with NBC‘s comedy gamble, ABC has actually had a lot of success with this in the past. What’s surprising, though, is having two sitcoms follow it, one set in the 80s. In perhaps the least surprising news, Rebel Wilson‘s (Pitch Perfect) sitcom Super Fun Night gets the cushiest slot on the schedule following Modern Family. Super Fun Night was actually in development last season at CBS but they ultimately passed on it before ABC took a crack at it. Like Fox, ABC didn’t really release a midseason schedule, suggesting that their plans aren’t nearly as firm as NBC likes to pretend it’s is.
