2013-14 Upfront Presentations: Fox

TV Nerd News!

Next up in our coverage of the 2013-14 Upfront Presentations is Fox. Fox isn’t quite at the same level of panic that NBC is but it’s getting close because their ratings juggernaut, American Idol, has slipped quite a bit this season and it’s not likely to rebound unless something drastic happens. Other than that, they don’t really have any hits other than perhaps New Girl and the Sunday animation block. One of Fox’s solutions to their issues is part of a company-wide (meaning, including FX) plan to introduce limited event series (what they’re calling mini-series these days basically), including bringing back 24. It’s an interesting move because it’s just the first move towards the larger goal of having original programming year round, something that the networks should’ve been considering a long time ago. Cable networks (mostly AMC and USA) have proven that people are just as willing to watch TV during the summer as they are during the colder months of the year, as long as what they’re producing is interesting and not just a random reality show.

Fox’s schedule is a bit different than NBC’s because it’s launching shows later in the fall and their midseason plans aren’t as firm. For example, four if it’s new shows aren’t even scheduled yet so we’ll have to provide more details on that at a later date. In the mean time, take a look at how they have their schedule setup for the fall. There’s a few shows with some real potential in there that Fox could turn into hits as long as they cultivate them correctly and not just abandon ship at the first sign of trouble (which they’re notorious for).
