The Bureau: Xcom Declassified Announced and Detailed

2012’s smash hit from Firaxis, XCOM: Enemy Unknown has paved the way for 2K Marin’s next project The Bureau: XCOM Declassified. Declassified will act as a prequel to Enemy Unknown. The Bureau was originally announced in 2010 to low levels of anticipation. After years of speculation 2K Marin’s XCOM was set to populate the saturated FPS genre. This wasn’t what the fervent XCOM fan base was expecting, nor did they want it. Until now much hadn’t been elaborated upon when it came to 2K Marin’s XCOM. What we know now will put the tactical shooters fan base at ease (at ease soldier).


 


The Bureau: XCOM Declassified will take place during the height of the U.S. and Russia’s Cold War. Americans are building bomb shelters to withstand a nuclear blast from the Soviet Union, a constant threat looms. What’s abundantly clear is that America wasn’t ready for an alien invasion.

Our new protagonist William Carter is part of the secretly formed defense division The Bureau. The division acts as the nations first line of defense against alien occupation. Carter is tasked with the protection of the American populace against physical harm, and no doubt the mass hysteria that will grip an alien occupied population. This event, and the subsequent cover up, will serve as the genesis of the XCOM Initiative.

Familiar mechanics return in The Bureau: XCOM Declassified. The third person tactical perspective returns. Your squad mates will once again have the ability to upgrade necessary battle techniques to become more effective. They’ll also retain their lifelike vitality (deaths can occur at any moment, and their permanent). Agents will again have the ability to salvage and reverse engineer alien tech to better outfit the squad.

Our experience won’t have linear restraints like many current generation titles. Instead a persistent map of the U.S. will act as a means of selecting missions, and the living narrative will progress with, or without your completion of non-selected missions. The missions themselves will be fairly linear, but the sandbox that is Xcom will allow for tactical placement of your team. Taking high ground, controlling choke points, and keeping your permadeath squad mates alive will be a must.
