In a recent interview with the BBC Gabe Newell stated that prototypes of the Steam Box should be ready to ship to customers/developers by Summer. The two main concerns at this time are noise – most likely due to the minimal casing for the unit, and heat generation.  They want the Steam Box Prototype in consumers hands to test out different controller layouts to find the best fit.

The Steam box will aim to offer a powerful gaming PC experience with the ability to upgrade components easily, and be accessible in the living room.
