Atari files for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy
Some sad news to start off our Monday. It’s been announced that Atari has filed for Chapter 11 protection as it attempts to transition away from it’s parent company Atari S.A. Rumor has it the iconic logo and some of the larger franchise offerings that are synonymous with Atari may be sold to help foot the bill.
The target time frame for the move is within the next 90-120 days and the sale of assets such as Pong, Breakout, Asteroids, Centipede, Missile Command, Tempest, Test Drive, and Backyard Sports are necessary evils to make the transition work.
Atari founder/creator Nolan Bushnell helped to pioneer the games industry with games like Pong and Breakout. These titles helped build the retro arcade industry that influenced movies like Disney’s memorable video game adventure Tron so heavily.
