Valve’s Steam Box rumor mill churning at high speed
The rumor mill around the fabled Valve Steam Box is turning so fast it could probably grind enough corn for the winter months in a matter of hours (Yay for isolationists!) There’s a bit of smoke and mirrors at play here.
We know FOR SURE that Valve has funded Xi3’s Piston via an interview with Xi3’s David Politis.
Politis hesitates to answer direct questions about the Piston being Valve’s Steam Box. He does however describe many of the features Valve’s Gabe Newell has eluded to during the weeks leading up to and at this years CES.
However, Newell also stated “We’ll come out with our own and we’ll sell it to consumers by ourselves,” Newell told The Verge. “That’ll be a Linux box, [and] if you want to install Windows you can. We’re not going to make it hard. This is not some locked box by any stretch of the imagination.” So it looks like Valve will take the R&D they’ve put their money into with Xi3 and develop hardware that will be Valve branded and optimized for Steam which appears to be codenamed “Bigfoot” aptly named in reference to it’s ambiguity.
It looks like it’s time to “pump ya breaks kid” for now as Valve’s Ben Krasnow stated that no real announcements will be made until after 2013. So let more “speculajecturumor” COMMENCE!
