2013 Reboot of Tomb Raider could include Multi-Player

So here’s the deal.  There are rumors that the Square Enix reboot of Tomb Raider could include Multi-Player modes.  When first hearing that conjecture a few things cross my mind.  First off a simple WHY comes to mind.  It doesn’t seem like it would fit into the series well.  So many developers are tacking on the Multi-Player offering just so there’s more to talk about when promoting their title.

Concerns typically arise when it comes to strong single player narratives adding the online component.  Will it actually add anything to the experience?  Some single player only Franchises have stunned their audience with fantastic online offerings as of late.  One example that comes to mind is Assassin’s Creed.  I was not excited to hear that Ubisoft was going to inject Multi-Player into a series four games deep into the fray.  However, what they ultimately offered was something completely original and totally fun.

My second concern is what resources are being moved towards the online component and away from the core experience.  A title that comes to mind as having unnecessary Multi-Player is the Uncharted Series.  The online offering was about as standard fare as you can get for a third person shooter and therefore I didn’t spend much time with it.  The great thing about Uncharted Multi-Player is that it obviously didn’t siphon the resources necessary to create a really great single player experience.

Some developers opt to throw in co-op instead of the full blown competitive online modes and it’s usually for the best.  Borderlands is one such title that very much excels when playing co-op but, just take a second to think about the possibility of Gearbox including competitive Multi-Player to the title and you’ll know exactly why it just doesn’t work in some cases.

So in conclusion I definitely don’t think Tomb Raider is going to benefit from adding in online components but, I’ve been wrong before.  Last of all don’t forget that I am simply ranting at a rumor at this point and sleep easy knowing that.  Leave a comment to let us know what you think about known single player titles adding online Multi-Player.
